Sounder Commuter Train - Seattle

Sound Transit was created by the state legislature to build a mass transit system that connects regional employment and population centers in King, Pierce, and Snohomish counties. Today, the foundation of that regional system is either in place or under construction. Sound Transit and the Regional Transportation Investment District work together to keep the region moving. They work to integrate transit and road improvements to reduce traffic backups and travel time, improve transit speed, reliability and capacity, and keep people and freight moving safely in the region’s most congested corridors.

Sounder Commuter Rail
Sounder commuter trains run 74 miles every weekday between Everett and Tacoma. Sounder North connects Everett and Edmonds with Seattle, and the station at Mukilteo is scheduled to come on line in 2007. Sounder South runs from Tacoma to Puyallup, Sumner, Auburn, Kent, Tukwila and downtown Seattle. An extension south to Lakewood is currently under development. Sound Transit’s rush-hour trains operate Monday through Friday in the peak direction. There are four morning trips between Tacoma and Seattle northbound with stops in Puyallup, Sumner, Auburn, Kent, Tukwila, and at Seattle’s King Street Station. In addition, there are two morning trips between Everett, Edmonds and Seattle southbound. In the afternoon there are four trips from Seattle southbound to Tacoma serving all stations, and two trips northbound from Seattle to Edmonds and Everett. Train riders traveling between Everett and Seattle can also take advantage of the RailPlus Program by using their monthly pass on select Amtrak trips. Tacoma Link
The Tacoma Link light rail line began operating in August 2003 and quickly became a major chapter in the renaissance of downtown Tacoma. Construction on the 15.6-mile Central Link light rail line is well underway, and service between downtown Seattle and Sea-Tac International Airport is scheduled to begin in 2009. Getting around downtown Tacoma and the region is a lot easier with Tacoma Link. Sound Transit’s light rail system connects the Tacoma Dome Station (a regional hub for local and express bus, and commuter train service) with downtown Tacoma. Link trains run every 10 minutes, Monday through Saturday, and every 10 to 20 minutes on Sunday. Best of all Tacoma Link is FREE! On holidays Tacoma Link operates every 20 minutes from 10 am to 6 pm. Two trains operate from either end of the rail route - one from Tacoma Dome Station and one from Theatre District Station.
